Any references to ‘Parent’ within the following is intended to include any parent(s), legal guardian(s), carer(s) or person(s) with whom the legal binding contract with myself (the childminder) is made. Any references made to the ‘child’ include child or children. Any references to ‘me’ ‘I’ ‘my’ refer to the Registered Childminder and any registered employees thereof.
As a registered childminder I have a duty to all the children in my care to provide an environment where each child can develop their full potential. To ensure that this is the case the following policies are written to offer a clear and concise foundation on which my practice is based.
• Admissions
• Equal opportunities
• Behaviour
• Food and drink
• Health and hygiene
• Safety
• Child Protection
• Working partnerships
1. Admissions
After initial communications with the parent I would arrange for:
• An informal introductory meeting.
• Offer of further information with more specific details relating to the families needs.
• Time for family and myself to consider possibility of the child being placed in my care.
• Contact to be made to discuss final decision.
It would be at this point that either party could state their preference not to pursue the matter further without fear of recourse.
I arrange for them to receive copies of some of the forms requiring signatures/completion. To include but not exclusively:
* name, address and contact number(s) of emergency contact
* name, address and contact number(s) of parent
* name, address and date of birth of each child to be cared for
* details of any ongoing medical requirements
* signed permission for the child to administer medications to self where applicable
* signed permission for me to administer medications to the child as required
* signed permission for me to administer first aid as required
* signed permission for me to take the children off the premises for trips etc and permission for transportation.
* Signed permission for me to seek medical/emergency aid as necessary. (Or written details specifying wishes)
* Ask that they bring the completed forms to a second meeting to discuss finer details of the child care provision.
* Agree and sign a formal contract (childminder to sign also)
* Discuss the best way to settle the child into the setting
* Agree times and dates for settling the child and official ‘start’ date (which can be changed at a later date to allow for the child’s individual needs)
2. Equal Opportunities
I am committed to treating each child and their family with equal concern and in doing so help children to learn through their play as individuals, with the right to feel valued and free from discrimination.
To ensure that I can fulfil this commitment I would;
• Ask that the parent give me as much information as possible about the child and their background.
• Ask that the parent give me as much information about the child’s likes and dislikes.
• Ask that the parent give me as much information as possible about any special requirements the child may have.
• Listen to and value the information given and endeavour to adapt my practices as necessary.
• Model through the equality and consistency in my own attitudes and care, and the attitudes and behaviour I expect from the children towards each other.
• Encourage communication between myself, the parent and other third parties as requested by the parent to ensure consistency of care, identification and support for any special needs the child may have.
3. Behaviour
In order for every child to benefit from the level of care I offer, I must ensure that I have clear and set boundaries for the behaviour I expect within my home, and consistency in how I manage unwanted behaviour.
To achieve this I would expect:
• Relationships based on mutual respect;
* I do not shout at the children, therefore I do not expect the children to shout at me, or others.
* I do not use corporal punishment on any child or threaten to use it and do not expect any aggressive or violent behaviour towards me, or others.
* I do not swear at, or in front of the children and would not expect the children to use inappropriate language whilst in my care.
* I would expect a level of care and consideration to be taken with my home and its’ contents (as appropriate to the child’s level of understanding and development.)
* I will encourage the use of good manners i.e. please, thank you, sitting to the table at meal times etc.
* Encouragement of good behaviour will be through example, through praise, offering responsibilities and consistency in my behaviour management/daily routines/expectations.
4. Food and drink
For healthy growth and development every child requires a balanced and nutritious diet incorporating religious and/or special dietary needs as required.
To ensure the well being of the children in my care I:
• Ask for as much information from the Parents about special dietary requirements/allergies/cultural/religious requirements for the preparation, storage and types of food provided.
• Agree with the parent who will provide the child’s meals.
• Encourage healthy eating and good food choices -
• Encourage awareness of better food choices and provision for children and parents.
• Where provision of meals is my responsibility I aim to keep sweets, biscuits, cakes etc as treats and to a minimum within a healthy balanced diet and offer healthier alternatives.
• Encourage children to drink water and/or full fat milk in preference to sugary alternatives.
• As appropriate to the age and development level of each child, I encourage sitting to the table for meal times (picnic rug etc) and sharing meal times as a group.
• Respecting and within the boundaries of specific dietary requirements I encourage the children to taste and experience a variety of food types and at least try a little of something new.
5. Health and Hygiene
It is natural that children will suffer and spread illness and infection, however through good practice and cleanliness in my home, the extent to which these infections are spread are minimised.
To ensure the well being of the children in my care I;
• Request that children suffering from sickness and/or diarrhoea are not placed in my care until at least 24 hours has elapsed since the last attack.
• Request that the parent informs me of any infection/illness the child may be suffering from and/or had been suffering from in the last 48 hours. With as much detail about the type of infection as possible.
• Maintaining confidentiality and discretion I will inform parents of any known infection their child may be exposed to and if necessary inform OFSTED of any notifiable disease under the Children Act regulations. (a notifiable disease is any infectious disease deemed notifiable by a qualified medical person)
• Request that parents inform me of any change to contact details (either their own or their emergency contacts)
• Contact will be made to the parent and/or emergency contact should the child show signs of illness and/or infection.
• Request that parents arrange for collection of their child if necessary, either in person or by a trusted other (within agreed ‘hand over policy’ – see Child protection) as soon as possible for the well being of their child and others in my care.
• Should a parent/emergency contact be uncontactable or unable to collect and the child requires medical attention I will arrange for the child to be seen by a qualified practitioner if necessary. (Following parental wishes specified in the permission forms.)
• Children will be encouraged to wash their hands after handling family pets through example.
• My home will be regularly cleaned and appropriate anti-

* Parents will be asked to sign an accident form to confirm any existing injuries/marks etc that the child has on arrival.
* Accident records will be held (see ‘Working partnerships’ policy) for a minimum of 20 years.
6. Safety
• A risk assessment will be completed for all the areas in my home and garden to which the children have access.
• Risk assessments will be in place for trips and outings.
• Risk assessments will be reviewed on a regular basis and changes made accordingly.
• I will ensure the appropriate level of supervision for the children at all times whilst allowing each child their own sense of self and responsibility.
• Fire alarms will be checked on a regular basis and action taken as necessary. Children will experience fire drills and the procedure if they should hear a fire alarm whilst in my care.
• Car seats used in my car, whether provided by the parent or myself, should be free from damage and well maintained. I will ask that parents demonstrate the correct fitting and restraint of the child on new seats before I use them.
• I will ensure that gates/doors are locked to prevent unwanted visitors to my home and garden.
• I ask that parents respect the need for good security procedures to ensure the safety of all the children by;
* Closing gates/doors behind them on arrival and departure.
* Challenging unknown ‘guests’ and making me aware of their presence.
* Informing me of changes to the collection times and/or person who is collecting the child. (Using a password system if the person is someone I haven’t met before.)
7. Child Protection
The protection of each child in my care is my priority, fulfilling this responsibility and complying with legal requirements mean:
• I will make and keep accurate records of any concerns/incidents of concern.
• I will report any concerns as soon as possible to Ofsted and follow procedures set by the local Area Child Protection Committee to minimise the risk to any child.
• I will notify Ofsted of any allegations of abuse, which is alleged to have taken place while the child is in my care.
• I ask parents to provide me where possible, details and photographs of people who may collect their child that I haven’t yet met. I may also ask (particularly in cases where no details/photographs are available) that the parent/collector/and myself have a password that only they would know to use, to ensure that I hand the child to the selected responsible adult authorised to collect them.
8. Working partnerships
To ensure the welfare and development of each child, communication between myself and the parent/other significant carers and practitioners is paramount.
To ensure the well being of the children in my care I:
• I try to give as much information about each child’s day as possible and agree with each parent the most appropriate form of feedback for their needs.
• I will inform parents of any accidents/incidents that may have occurred during the day (see health and hygiene policy) and as appropriate, inform the parent of any unusual behaviour or concerns that may have been observed throughout the day.
I will need to hold some information, which may contain private and confidential material. Such as (but not exclusively) the following;
* accident and incident records
* signed permission for medication administration
* signed permission for trips and outings
* signed permission for transportation
* signed permission for photographs
* details of the child’s full name, address, date of birth, medical history, specific needs, etc
* Details of the family background, culture.
* Details of the parents’ name, address, contact numbers
* Details of emergency contacts name, address, contact numbers
* Payment and receipt agreements/records
* Contract records

their individual needs, to have readily available information in emergency situations
should they be needed, as well as providing a comprehensive record for future reference
should any medical or developmental concerns arise at a later date. Other records
may be needed to ensure the safety and well being of the child and to confirm good
practice on my part -
• Records and information will be stored in a safe and secure place.
• Access to this information will be limited for my own use, to the parent for whom it concerns (within guidelines set for child protection) and other agencies, for example a speech therapist, or Ofsted for inspection purposes.
